1. Before commercial whaling the bowhead whale was so frequent, it was referred to as common whale. Until the early 20th century the population was severely reduced. Today there are estimated 5000-8000 individuals left.
2. During their migration period in spring bowhead whales form groups with up to 14 individuals in a V shaped swimming order. Before being hunted excessively those groups counted up to 100 whales.
3. A scientist of the Scripps Institution of Oceanography examined 48 frozen bowhead whale eyes to find out the age of their owners. He found evidence that one of them was 211 years old.
4. Bowhead whales are perhaps one of the most aged animals on earth. A member of the International Whaling Commission (IWC) found a 135 year old harpoon head inside a giant bowhead whale caught off the coast in Alaska.
5. Latest research showed that the bowhead whales genes have a massive lower chance to develop into cancer than other mammals. One mammal with a similar genome and longevity is the naked mole rat, it can live up to 28 years which makes it the most persistent rodent. Recently scientist try to breed mice with the special bowhead whale genes and test whether they live longer or remain healthy longer.
6. The bowhead has the largest mouth of any animal. Inuit hunters have reported bowheads surfacing through 60 cm (24 in) of ice.
7. Bowhead whales are highly vocal and use low frequency (<1000 Hz) sounds to communicate. Scientists of the University of Washington recorded 66 unique songs being sung by one small group of whales.
8. Today commercial whaling of the bowhead whale is forbidden by the IWC. Due to limited access to fruits and vegetables and traditional reasons, some aboriginal communities like the Inuit in Greenland or the Iñupiat in Canada are permitted to hunt a fixed number of whales. Each member of the Iñupiats community gets a part of the whales blubber according to a traditional formula.
